01 About this service

What the work involves.

Tree removal depends on the size of the tree, where it stands and what’s nearby: fences, roofs, power lines, neighbors’ property. Large trees near structures come down in sections, lowered piece by piece, rather than felled in one cut. Smaller trees and trees in open yards are quicker. Either way the job includes cutting up and hauling away the wood and debris — you shouldn’t be left with a pile — and the stump can be dealt with as part of the same visit.

Because EKN also does landscaping, sod, concrete and fencing, tree removal is often the first step of a larger yard project: taking out an overgrown tree to make room for a patio, clearing a fence line, or removing roots that are lifting a walkway. We can plan the removal and what comes next together.

Tree removal in Northern Utah

Late fall and winter are the best seasons for tree removal along the Wasatch Front: the canopy is bare, the ground is firm or frozen, and lawns and beds take less damage from equipment. Summer storms and heavy spring snow are when emergency removals happen, which is why we keep a 24-hour line.

One thing many homeowners don’t know: trees in the park strip between the sidewalk and the street are usually city property. In Salt Lake City, work on those trees goes through the Urban Forestry division, and Ogden and other cities have similar rules. Trees inside your property line are yours to remove. If you’re not sure which is which, send us a photo and we’ll help you figure it out before anything is scheduled.

Helpful to mention when you call or text

  • Number of trees and their approximate height
  • How close they are to buildings, fences or lines
  • Whether you also want the stump dealt with
  • Access for equipment
02 Questions

Tree Removal questions.

Do you offer emergency tree removal?

Yes. EKN is available 24 hours, including for trees that have fallen on a fence, roof or driveway after a storm. Call rather than text for emergencies.

Do I need a permit to remove a tree in Salt Lake City?

Trees on private property generally don’t need a permit. Trees in the park strip or other public right-of-way belong to the city and require approval from Salt Lake City Urban Forestry (other cities have similar rules). We’ll help you confirm which applies.

Do you remove the stump too?

Yes — stump removal or grinding can be included. Tell us whether you want the stump gone so the area can be re-landscaped, sodded or paved.

What happens to the wood and branches?

Everything is cut up and hauled away unless you’d like the wood left for firewood. The area is raked and cleaned before we leave.

When is the best time of year to remove a tree in Utah?

Late fall through winter is ideal — bare branches, firm ground, less impact on the yard. Removals happen year-round when a tree is hazardous or in the way of a project.

Where do you remove trees?

Salt Lake City and throughout Northern Utah: Ogden, Layton, Bountiful, West Valley City, West Jordan, Sandy, South Jordan, Herriman, Lehi, Orem, Provo, Park City and Tooele.
