01 About this service

What the work involves.

Driveways, patios, walkways, steps and pads all come down to the same basics: a stable, compacted base; the right thickness and reinforcement for the load; a slope that sends water away from the house; and a clean, consistent finish. New pours are formed, poured, finished and cured with control joints placed so that the inevitable cracking happens where it’s meant to.

Repair work is often really replacement. Once a slab has heaved from frost, spalled from de-icing salt, or cracked through from a poor base, patching rarely lasts. The better fix is to cut out and replace the failed sections — or the whole slab — with a proper base underneath. We’ll tell you honestly which sections can be saved and which should be redone.

Concrete that survives Utah winters

Northern Utah puts concrete through dozens of freeze-thaw cycles every winter, and de-icing salt makes it worse — that’s why so many Wasatch Front driveways spall and flake at the surface. Air-entrained concrete mixes, proper thickness, well-placed control joints and a sealed surface all help, and so does keeping salt off new concrete in its first winter.

The ground matters as much as the mix. Much of the valley sits on clay soils that expand when wet and shrink when dry, which heaves and settles slabs poured on an inadequate base. Good base preparation — excavation, compacted gravel, drainage away from the slab — is the difference between concrete that lasts a few years and concrete that lasts decades. Late spring through early fall is the best pouring season here; we avoid pours that can’t cure before hard freezes.

02 Questions

Concrete Installation & Repair questions.

Can you repair my cracked driveway, or does it need replacing?

Minor surface cracks can sometimes be sealed, but heaved, badly spalled or sunken sections are usually better cut out and replaced on a proper base. We’ll look at it and give you a straight answer.

How thick should a driveway be?

Residential driveways are typically poured at four inches, with more thickness and reinforcement where vehicles or RVs are heavier. Pads for RVs and trailers are planned for the load.

How long before I can use new concrete?

Foot traffic after a day or two, vehicles after about a week, and full strength around four weeks. We’ll give you specific guidance for your pour and the weather.

Do you remove and haul away the old concrete?

Yes. Demolition, removal and disposal of the old slab are part of a replacement project.

When is the best time to pour concrete in Utah?

Late spring through early fall. Concrete needs time to cure above freezing, so we schedule pours to avoid hard-freeze weeks.

Where do you do concrete work?

Salt Lake City and throughout Northern Utah — Ogden, Layton, Bountiful, West Valley City, West Jordan, Sandy, South Jordan, Herriman, Lehi, Orem, Provo, Park City and Tooele.
