What the work involves.
Landscaping covers the planted and finished areas of a yard: beds and borders, trees and shrubs, rock, mulch and edging, and the grading underneath that keeps water moving away from the house. Most projects start with a walk around the property to see where the sun falls, where water collects and how much time you want to spend on upkeep.
Because EKN also installs sod, artificial turf, sprinkler systems, fencing and concrete, a landscaping project can include the pieces that usually need a second contractor. Irrigation lines go in before the beds are finished, borders are set before the sod is laid, and one crew stays responsible for how it all fits together.
Typical landscaping projects
- Front and back yard landscaping
- Planting beds, borders and edging
- Trees, shrubs and perennials
- Decorative rock, gravel and mulch
- Water-wise and low-maintenance yards
- Park-strip conversions
- Grading and drainage correction
- Yard clean-outs and re-landscaping
Landscaping for Utah conditions
Northern Utah yards deal with clay-heavy soil, a short growing season, hot dry summers and freeze-thaw winters. Plant choice, bed preparation and drainage all matter more here than in milder climates, and a design that works in a catalog can struggle on the Wasatch Front.
Water is the other big factor. Many Utah cities and water districts offer rebates for replacing lawn with water-wise landscaping and for converting park strips (the “flip your strip” programs run through Utah Water Savers). Rules and amounts change, so check your city’s current program before you plan — we’re happy to build a yard that fits the requirements.

Landscaping questions.
What areas do you landscape?
We serve Salt Lake City and the Wasatch Front from Ogden to Provo, including Layton, Bountiful, West Valley City, West Jordan, Sandy, South Jordan, Herriman, Lehi, Orem, Park City and Tooele. If you’re nearby but not on the list, call or text and we’ll confirm.
Do you charge for landscaping estimates?
No. Estimates are free throughout our service area.
When is the best time to landscape in Utah?
Spring and fall are the easiest seasons for planting because the ground is workable and temperatures are moderate. Rock, mulch, edging and grading work can happen most of the year as long as the ground isn’t frozen.
Can you replace my lawn with something that needs less water?
Yes. Water-wise beds, rock and mulch, drought-tolerant plants and drip irrigation can replace all or part of a lawn. We can also combine this with artificial turf for areas you still want green.
Do you handle the sprinklers too?
Yes — sprinkler and drip work is one of our services, so irrigation can be planned with the landscaping instead of after it.
